Made to suit the house
Stone is the defining material of Harrogate. The Victorian spa town was built largely from local gritstone and sandstone, and those warm honey and grey tones run through the Duchy, the streets around the Stray and the older parts of Knaresborough. A bright concrete drive in front of a stone villa can look out of place. Natural setts and block paving in sympathetic colours, a golden gravel or a resin blend chosen to echo the stonework usually works far better.
Newer homes in Jennyfields, Killinghall and Pannal give more freedom: crisp greys, contrasting borders and modern edging.
Hills, frost and drainage
Harrogate sits higher than much of the Vale of York, and winters can be cold, with hard frosts and the odd heavy snowfall. Water that sits in a poorly drained sub-base freezes, expands and pushes paving apart. Streets around Harlow Hill and Oatlands also slope, so drives need sensible falls and sometimes retaining edges. We build the base for the conditions and plan drainage before choosing a surface.
Walls, gateposts and trees
Many Harrogate frontages have original stone walls, gate piers and mature trees. We protect what is worth keeping and work carefully around roots. Our guide to driveways for stone villas covers this in more detail, along with conservation area questions.
Since the council changed
Planning and highways in Harrogate have been handled by North Yorkshire Council since April 2023, when it replaced Harrogate Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council. If your kerb needs dropping, the vehicle crossing process now runs through North Yorkshire Council.
